Senate Democrats stuck at Biden impasse

• Behind closed doors. Biden's staunchest supporters, like Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), pitched other Democrats on the dangers of another Trump presidency and defended some of Biden's most glaring weaknesses.
• Others who are skeptical that Biden can defeat Trump said the conversation was "constructive" but many remain unmoved.

The intrigue: Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who has publicly supported Biden, facilitated the discussion but did not make an argument for or against the president, Coons and another source briefed on the meeting told Axios.

• Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) raised broad concerns about the Biden campaign and Democratic party's economic message, according to Coons.
• Schumer said after the meeting that he was still standing behind Biden.

Driving the news: Democrats were more interested in talking about Trump than Biden.

• "I would describe it as a constructive conversation, and we're focused on defeating Trump," Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) said.

• Baldwin, who has said her constituents are concerned about Biden, said Tuesday's discussion did not change her perspective.
• "It was certainly consensus on this critical point that we need to defeat Donald Trump," said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), who has thrown his support behind Biden.

Reality check: What Democrats did not say is that they are united behind Biden as the nominee.

• Instead, it looks like Democrats remain divided. This, despite a number of them saying this week that they need to come to a consensus sooner rather than later.
