Trump's N.Y. trial gag order remains after latest failed appeal

A New York court declined on Tuesday to hear an appeal from former President Trump to throw out his gag order in his hush money case, which he was convicted in last month.

Why it matters: It's the latest unsuccessful effort from the former president's legal team to dismiss the partial gag order, which bars him from commenting on witnesses, prosecutors, court staff and jurors and their family members.

Driving the news: The New York Court of Appeals wrote in a decision list published on Tuesday that Trump's appeal was dismissed "upon the ground that no substantial constitutional question is directly involved."

State of play: Trump has repeatedly criticized his gag order in the case. His lawyers have made several failed attempts to have it lifted.

After Trump was found guilty in the New York case on 34 felony counts, his lawyers argued that the order should be lifted because the trial was over.
The Manhattan District Attorney's office opposed Trump's request, writing that the order wasn't just needed to "avoid threats to the fairness of the trial itself," but on the court's "broader 'obligation to prevent actual harm to the integrity of the proceedings.'"

What's next: Trump has a sentencing hearing on July 11, four days before the start of the Republican National Convention.
