Trump awards Tiger Woods Presidential Medal of Freedom

President Trump presented golfing great Tiger Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom at a White House ceremony in Washington, D.C. Monday

Details: Trump praised Woods for his "relentless will to win," as he awarded the 43-year-old the highest U.S. civilian honour. "Tiger Woods is a global symbol of American excellence, devotion and drive," Trump said. "These qualities embody the American spirit of pushing boundaries, defying limits and always striving for greatness."

The big picture: This year has seen an tremendous turnaround in Woods' fortunes. Last month, he won his 5th Masters title at Augusta — ending an 11-year drought to claim his 15th major.

Stories about President Trump's photo op at St. John's church after peaceful protesters were forcefully cleared from the area averaged the most online attention of any issue about the president this week.

Why it matters: Trump's force-over-compassion approach to the demonstrators protesting the murder of George Floyd had Republican allies backpedaling to keep a distance — and led to a wave of condemnations that got plenty of online traction on their own.
