1 big thing: Heat wave smashes records

Heat records were broken this week in more than 280 locations across the U.S. Axios' Sareen Habeshian reports from NOAA data.
- New daily heat records were set in at least 50 cities on Tuesday alone.
☀️ Where it stands: Nearly 130 million people are under extreme heat warnings or advisories today, as a heat dome continues to scorch the Midwest and East Coast.
- And the heat wave is expected to continue at least into tomorrow.
2. 💼 DOGE cuts hit private sector


The Trump administration's cuts to the federal workforce — spearheaded by Elon Musk's DOGE — are beginning to bleed into the private sector, Axios' Emily Peck reports.
- Job listings from the 25 largest federal contractors are down 15% since January, according to data from Indeed.
- Postings from all other employers fell by just 0.5%.
✂️ "There's been a pretty clear nose dive" among federal contractors, said Cory Stahle, an economist with the Indeed Hiring Lab.

- 🏛️ The Senate's parliamentarian struck a Medicaid provision from President Trump's "big, beautiful bill," which will require Republicans to find new spending cuts. Several provisions have been axed for failing to comply with the Senate's budget rules. Go deeper.

4. 💍 Wedding weekend

Celebrities have begun flocking to Venice for Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's wedding this weekend.
- The Kardashians, Oprah Winfrey, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Brady, among others, were all spotted in the city ahead of a welcome party last night, per People.
- Hardly any details about the festivities have been made public.
