March on Washington faces a Gen Z test

• The test: showing a generation decades removed from Jim Crow how protecting the vote changes everyday life.
• The March on Washington will take place on Friday, marking the 63rd anniversary of the historic 1963 march.

By the numbers: Black voters ages 18–29 backed Kamala Harris by a 50-point margin in 2024, according to CIRCLE's analysis of AP VoteCast — but that represented a 27-point swing toward Trump from 2020.

• 36% of Black youth named the economy and jobs as their top issue, compared with 11% who named racism.

State of play: The march is organized by the Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network and the Drum Major Institute with Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters King.

• Sharpton tells Axios the goal is to generate national attention, then send participants home to organize through the final eight weeks before the midterms.
• "Redistricting means nothing to you. That's your grandparents talking," Sharpton said he tells younger audiences.
• The key, he said, is connecting political power to college debt, jobs and diversity policies: "You gotta be able to talk to them."

Zoom out: Economic concerns aren't a departure from the original march, which demanded fair employment and a living wage.

• Theodore Johnson, a senior adviser at New America, tells Axios younger Black voters increasingly see voting access as necessary but insufficient.
• They may wait hours to vote, then ask whether that vote will produce a good-paying job, affordable health care, housing or child care, Johnson said.

The bottom line: The bigger challenge comes after Friday: whether civil rights groups can turn historical memory into Gen Z organizing by showing how voting rights can be a tool for economic security.
