D.C. is saying "Alright, alright, alright" now that the Washington Commanders are 6-2 after a stunning Hail Mary pass by quarterback Jayden Daniels on Sunday, but perhaps no one is happier than … actor Matthew McConaughey?
Why it matters: Yep, you read that correctly — Texas celebrity and huge University of Texas fan McConaughey doesn't root for the Dallas Cowboys. He's all in on our DMV team.
Driving the news: On Monday, the actor posted on X a selfie tribute to the Commanders' victory while wearing a burgundy-and-gold hat reading "Hail" — and D.C.'s online fans immediately wanted to know how to get their hands on one to pull off their own McConaugh-slay.
- Demand for the hat has been wild since McConaughey's post, Jade Preis, who owns merch company Savior Clothing, tells Axios.
- She estimates sales have spiked over 1,000% across her site since Monday. "It's off the charts."
Context: McConaughey became a fan of the now-Commanders when he was 4 years old for pretty legit reasons: Chris Hanburger was a linebacker for the D.C. team at the time, McConaughey said on "The Rich Eisen Show" in 2020, and the player's last name was very similar to 'lil McConaughey's fave food — hamburgers.
- As a kid, he'd paint his entire body burgundy and travel to Dallas to watch the DMV team take on the Cowboys, he told NBC4 in an interview last year.
His fandom has reached new heights in adulthood: He attended the first game at FedEx Field and the last game at RFK stadium, he told NBC4 — and he even has a mason jar containing dirt from RFK's end zone.
