Vikings-Bears matchup is a tale of two rebuilds

State of play: The 8-2 Vikings will play the 4-6 Bears on Sunday in Chicago, a city where the fans are enraged over the team's four-game losing streak.

• (Just listen to Bill from the Northwest Side of Chicago, who called into sports talk radio to vent — and vent he did.)

The Windy City rebuild: The Bears hired a defensive-minded coach in Matt Eberflus and basically tanked for good draft picks.

• They wound up with the top pick in this year's draft, allowing them to select highly-touted quarterback Caleb Williams.

Righting the Viking ship: The Vikings hired Kevin O'Connell, a former quarterback whose viral postgame speeches are one of several ways he connects with his players.

• Minnesota opted for a "competitive rebuild," slowly replacing veterans with younger players, but keeping the team respectable.

By the numbers: O'Connell's record as a head coach: 28-16.

• Eberflus: 14-30.

Yes, but: While the Vikings are likely headed to the playoffs in January and the Bears for the beach in Mexico, the long-term successes of these two franchises lie with their young quarterbacks.

• Williams has been off to an up-and-down start for the Bears, but there's still time for him to become great.
• The Vikings' own rookie quarterback, J.J. McCarthy is missing this season following knee surgery, but he's likely to start next year.
