Members of the LGBTQ community say the remembrance of Pride Month's roots in protest is more pertinent than ever this year with attacks on LGBTQ rights — especially transgender rights — flaring up all across the nation.

Pride Month traces its origins to the Stonewall Riots on June 28, 1969, when police raided a queer bar in New York City and faced an unprecedented movement of resistance led by trans activists.

A year later, San Francisco held its first Pride celebration to commemorate the uprising, holding a march on Polk Street as well as a "gay-in" picnic in Golden Gate Park.

This year, San Francisco's Pride weekend takes place June 24-25, with the annual parade starting at 10:30am on June 25. The event, which is expected to draw up to 1 million attendees, is one of dozens slated for the month of June.

The annual San Francisco International LGBTQ+ Film Festival returns for its 47th year of queer cinema at the Castro Theatre and other historic theaters June 14-24.

The production featuring an array of queer and trans performances will be in person for the first time in three years, with different programs spread out across June 14-18 at Z Space in San Francisco.

San Francisco's annual Trans March is set for June 23 in the Castro. The 20-year-old celebration harkens back to the Compton's Cafeteria Riot, which took place in 1966 when trans women fought back against police harassment at a popular queer restaurant.

The 31st annual Dyke March, which kicks off June 24 at 5pm and weaves through the Castro, serves as a "call to action" this year, according to organizers. The rally will be a "self-identified dyke-only space," though allies are invited to support marchers from the sidelines.

The Civic Center Plaza near City Hall will feature a crowd of exhibitions, vendors and stages from noon to 6pm on June 24 and 11am to 6pm on June 25.

Running concurrent to the Pride Parade on June 24 will be the Castro Family Pride Block Party. The free event on Noe Street will include kids' activities, storytime, drag performances, a petting zoo, a costume contest and more.

With summer approaching, it's time to double down on sun protection.

Why it matters: Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. While California's estimated rate of new cases — 26.3 per 100,000 in 2022 — remains lower than the national rate, it's still much higher than the state's rates prior to 2018.

Don't think you'll be spared just because of Karl the Fog. UV radiation penetrates regardless of the weather and is the cause of most skin cancer cases and deaths — many of them preventable, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Children are especially susceptible to harmful UV radiation. Around 23% of lifetime sun exposure accumulates prior to the age of 18, per the California Department of Parks and Recreation.

"Just one or two blistering sunburns in childhood can double the risk of developing melanoma," the agency warns.

Reality check: Getting a base tan won't prevent sunburn, Axios' Carly Mallenbaum writes.

A suntan only provides an SPF (sun protection factor) of less than 4, while a tan from the salon could provide an SPF of less than 1, said EPA senior policy adviser Nancy Akerman.

Damage from UV exposure is cumulative over your lifetime, so a base tan "increases your likelihood of developing not only skin cancer, but also wrinkles [and] brown spots," dermatologist Nazanin Saedi told Axios.

The strength of UV radiation is also higher in states closer to the equator, including parts of California, a 2020 cancer study found.

If you want to protect your skin, you're better off wearing sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher, and reapplying.

Helpful tip: To figure out how long a sunscreen will remain effective, multiply the SPF factor by the average length of time it takes you to develop a sunburn without sunscreen, according to UCSF Health medical specialists.

A sunscreen with an SPF of 15, for example, will provide protection for 150 minutes if you typically develop a sunburn within 10 minutes when not wearing sunscreen.

Of note: Skin cancer prevention takes more than sunscreen. Health experts also recommend wearing clothes that cover skin — such as long sleeves or long loose pants — and/or protective fabrics that filter out UVA and UVB rays.

Driving the news: In a resolution adopted by the United States Conference of Mayors this week, the bipartisan group of mayors emphasized the need to amplify public communications about drug safety and open-air markets, including online and social media sales.

They're also urging the federal government to bolster collaboration with local authorities in taking down drug trafficking.

What she's saying: "Locally we are doing all we can to address the challenges of open-air drug dealing of fentanyl in our community," Breed said in a written statement. 

"Despite the strong and laudable efforts of our local law enforcement agencies, we know San Francisco — and cities across the United States — needs more support. The trafficking and dealing of fentanyl is a national crisis, and requires a robust response from the federal government."

There are a few essentials you want to consider when looking for the right sunscreen.

That includes: An SPF preferably of 30 or higher, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

Broad spectrum, which will protect against both UVA (associated with skin aging) and UVB (associated with skin burning) rays, as well as water resistance.

Sunscreen formulas. Products with physical ingredients scatter UV rays from the top layer of skin, while those with chemical ingredients absorb UV rays on the skin.

Watch for ingredients that may cause irritation or allergic reactions, such as para-aminobenzoic acid.

Banana Boat Light As Air Sunscreen SPF 50+

This sunscreen has been described as lightweight, shine-free, and nongreasy. 

It does have a banana scent that could aggravate sensitive skin.

Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50+

This sunscreen absorbs easily and does not contain any added fragrances.

Testers say it sometimes leaves a white cast.

This sunscreen, ideal for outdoor activities, is particularly durable against water and sweat.

Some reviews have said it caused skin irritation.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk Sunscreen SPF 60 

This sunscreen blends well into the skin and uses physical sun filters for advanced protection.

It doesn't always result in a matte finish and can leave skin looking shiny.

SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50

This sunscreen has been lauded as a transparent, mattifying liquid. 

It's only water-resistant for up to 40 minutes and is on the more expensive side.

This sunscreen, often referred to as a drugstore favorite, leaves a sheer finish and doesn't dry out skin. 

It may cause eye irritation, and some testers report feeling an oily residue.
