If you want a box of fruits and vegetables dropped on your doorstep, you might consider signing up for a CSA box.

The big picture: You can buy boxes or sign up for subscriptions from local farms, and they deliver the fresh produce to you, so you don't have to brave the crowds at a farmers market.

CSA means "community supported agriculture" and is meant to help consumers support local farms.

The pluses: You get a box full of local fruits and vegetables that are all very fresh and tasty.

The minuses: Some boxes don't let you choose what produce you get and don't tell you what you're getting ahead of time. That can make planning meals or recipes a bit challenging at times, unless you decide to get creative. 

Cost varies depending on what you add to your cart, but orders start at a $35 minimum and ship on a weekly schedule.

It's easy to sign up for, and emails are received three days before the shopping window closes.

Unlike a traditional CSA, Misfits lets you customize your box before it ships, so you can swap out produce or add pantry staples, meat and dairy. 

Misfits says it can often offer lower prices than traditional grocery stores because it buys food that might otherwise go unsold or be discounted, including produce with cosmetic imperfections and surplus inventory that could otherwise go to waste.

Costs $44 a week and requires signing up for a weekly subscription.

The produce includes a mix of seasonal fruits and vegetables grown in Half Moon Bay and sourced from other local farms. 

If a subscription isn't your thing, the farm also offers one-off boxes for $45, making it easy to test the service before committing. Delivery is free throughout much of the Bay Area.

Costs $27 per pickup box if you buy a four-box package (or less per box with larger bundles) and lets you choose how often you receive deliveries — weekly, every other week or on another schedule that works for you.

The catch: Full Belly primarily operates as a pickup CSA, with designated pickup sites around the Bay Area instead of doorstep delivery in most cases. 

The flexibility is a nice perk, though, if you don't want another recurring weekly commitment or prefer choosing a pickup location that's convenient.

San Francisco will be rolling out lower speed limits around schools citywide ahead of the new school year, becoming one of the first California cities to take advantage of a new state law aimed at improving pedestrian safety.

Why it matters: Speed is one of the biggest factors in determining whether a traffic crash becomes fatal, especially for children walking or biking to school. 

City leaders say lower speed limits are a proven way to reduce severe injuries and deaths.

Driving the news: The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency last  week announced a citywide initiative that will lower speed limits within 500 feet of every private and public school. It's expected to become a statewide standard by 2031.

Streets with one lane in each direction will be posted at 15 mph.

Wider, multilane streets will be posted at 20 mph.

The first new signs will be installed near six schools at the end of summer break, with the rest of the rollout happening over the next two years.

The schools are Dr. William L. Cobb Elementary School, Leonard R. Flynn Elementary School, St. Anthony-Immaculate Conception School, Jefferson Elementary School, Roosevelt Middle School and Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts, per SFMTA. 

The big picture: The effort is enabled by a California law signed last year that gives cities more flexibility to lower school-zone speed limits from the longstanding 25 mph standard. 

Similar programs are launching across California, including San Diego.

Zoom in: The speed limit changes are one piece of a broader school safety push. 

SFMTA is also adding protected bike lanes, upgraded crosswalks and other traffic-calming improvements near schools, including around the new Mission Bay Elementary School. 

Officials also say the city's automated speed cameras — a program they plan to expand — have already reduced dangerous speeding as much as 90% in monitored locations.

What's next: Crews will begin installing new speed limit signs before the new semester begins next month, with the remaining school zones phased in citywide through 2028. 

Drivers in vehicles including autonomous ones must comply with the new posted limits once signs are in place.

The woman at the center of Gavin Newsom's biggest political scandal is telling her story for the first time, reviving a chapter of San Francisco political history as the governor faces fresh national scrutiny ahead of a potential 2028 presidential bid.

Why it matters: For many longtime San Franciscans, the extramarital affair is old news — a scandal that rocked City Hall and almost ended Newsom's career nearly 20 years ago.

But as the governor lays the groundwork for a possible White House run, the episode is reaching a broader national audience unfamiliar with one of the defining controversies of his political rise.

Driving the news: Ruby Rippey, Newsom's appointments secretary while he was San Francisco's mayor, detailed in Vanity Fair this week the 2005 affair that ruptured her marriage to Newsom's friend and then-deputy chief of staff Alex Tourk.

Rippey decided to speak out after reading Newsom's memoir — in which he acknowledged the affair in a single paragraph — saying it prompted her to reclaim a story that in her view has been told almost exclusively through his lens.

She disputes Newsom's portrayal of the affair as a brief episode, writing that the relationship spanned months and included repeated late-night meetings.

She also denies Newsom's claim that he confessed to Tourk, writing that she was the one who told her husband. She argues the public narrative has largely focused on Newsom's political redemption while overlooking the lasting effect it had on her life.

The other side: Newsom's office declined to comment on Rippey's essay beyond pointing to the governor's public apology from nearly two decades ago, per Politico.

Newsom has repeatedly acknowledged the affair since it became public, calling it one of the "biggest mistakes" of his life.

The big picture: The essay arrives as Newsom closes out his final year as California governor while raising his national profile through a memoir, podcast appearances and other media engagements.

Newsom is increasingly facing the vetting reserved for likely presidential contenders, where decades-old controversies often resurface.

Catch up quick: The affair became public in 2007 when Newsom publicly apologized and Tourk resigned. The then-mayor was already divorced from his first wife, Kimberly Guilfoyle, when it began.

His political ambitions were nearly derailed, but the scandal did not stop him from later winning statewide office.

Between the lines: While the affair was consensual, Rippey writes that she now views it differently because of the power imbalance between a mayor and a subordinate.

She also reflects on her recovery from addiction, saying she is speaking out because she no longer wants to be a footnote in Newsom's political story.

"Until now, silence felt like the right choice," she wrote in a private Facebook post cited by the SF Standard. "Now it feels necessary to offer a fuller account of what happened, rather than allowing a misleading account to stand as the whole story."

You don't have to go far from the city to get out in nature. 

Within an hour of San Francisco, you can hike through redwood forests, along dramatic cliffs, around quiet lakes, and to waterfalls that empty onto the beach — all before making it home for dinner.

Here are five trails worth adding to your weekend plans.

No better landmark defines Marin than Mount Tam. Hiking to its summit is practically a Bay Area rite of passage.

Depending on the weather, you'll catch views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, the Farallon Islands or the rolling hills stretching north toward Sonoma.

Some days you'll be above the fog. Those are the days you'll remember.

Need a hike that doesn't require an entire Saturday? This is the one.

The wide, gently rolling trail leads to a secluded beach framed by dramatic coastal bluffs. It's scenic and beginner friendly.

Alpine Lake, Hidden Lake and Bon Tempe Loop

Tucked into the Mount Tam watershed, this loop winds past quiet reservoirs and shady forests. It's a favorite of those looking to escape the crowds without driving deep into wine country or the Sierras.

Bring lunch and linger by the lake. No one's rushing you here.

This is the hike to save for the days when you want to feel far away from the city. 

The trail follows a narrow stretch of Point Reyes, with panoramic views of Tomales Bay on one side and the ocean on the other. The views are reason enough to make the drive, but most people come hoping to spot the tule elk, which roam the preserve year-round.

The trail to Kirby Cove descends through eucalyptus groves before opening up to a quiet beach with a front-row view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The hike is short but steep. The views are worth it. 

Parking is limited, especially on weekends, and the cove is also a popular campground. Arrive early if you're hoping to snag a spot and enjoy the beach before the crowds arrive.
