San Francisco adopts new street safety plan to reduce fatal crashes

State of play: The Street Safety Act, authored by District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar, sets targets for seven city agencies to coordinate on designing and enforcing new safety measures.

What they're saying: "We need to be robust in our thinking to increase safety to make sure that families on all modes of transportation ... can get around smoothly," District 2 Supervisor Stephen Sherrill said during Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting.

How it works: The plan calls for upgrades like hardened daylighting on high-risk corridors, adding curb extensions and islands to dangerous intersections and creating a faster system for installing speed humps.
