Happy National Dog Day to the good boys and girls out there — including the many Frenchies.
Driving the news: The French bulldog is the most popular dog breed in San Francisco, according to a new U.S. News & World Report analysis. Golden retrievers ranked second and chihuahuas came in third.
- The Frenchie is also the top dog breed in California, followed by the chihuahua and chihuahua mix. We are one of two states with only small breeds in their top three.
The fine print: The annual report relies on pet insurance data, so it doesn't account for all dogs in the country.
- Data points analyzed include dog breeds, dog owner ZIP codes and state residences.
Yes, but: It's tricky to track mutt popularity.
- The study counted "mixed breed," "pit bull" and labels like "German shepherd mix" as separate categories. The goldendoodle was the only mixed breed to crack the top 10.

The big picture: It's a big year for the dachshund, which made its debut on the top 10 national ranking this year.
- Labrador retrievers took the top spot in the U.S., followed by the chihuahua and golden retriever.
Shawna's thought bubble: Thanks to the "Air Bud" movies, I grew up believing golden retrievers were the most popular dog in America.
- I'm a bit surprised poodle mixes didn't make it in SF's top three, though. I feel like I always see them out and about.
- But I have a sweet little bichonpoo at home, so I may be biased.
What's next: If you're looking for an adorable pooch of your own, the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has a myriad of pups available for adoption.
