Immigrants make up about 32% of hospital workers in California — the highest in the U.S., according to census data analyzed by KFF.
Why it matters: The health care industry is facing a double challenge:a White House immigration crackdown that could translate to worker shortages and federal health care spending cuts.
Meanwhile, an aging population will require more care.
By the numbers: Nationwide, 16% of hospital workers are immigrants — roughly in line with the share of the workforce that's foreign-born.
Other states with high shares include New York (29%), New Jersey (28.9%) and Florida (27%).
