In the San Francisco metro area, Safeway takes the cake.
- It's no surprise, given the chain's 98 stores across San Francisco, Oakland and Hayward. It earned $3.5 billion in estimated sales last year.
- Costco (my beloved) came in second with $2.7 billion from its 18 locations.
- Save Mart clinched third-place ahead of bigger names like Whole Foods and Walmart with $1.2 billion in sales across 44 stores.
The intrigue: Several grocers that cater to specific ethnic groups landed just outside the top 10, including Cardenas Markets and 99 Ranch.
