How other Bay Area elections are playing out

South of San Francisco, Democrat and former San José Mayor Sam Liccardo defeated Assemblymember Evan Low (D-Sunnyvale) in a contentious race to represent California's 16th Congressional District in the U.S. House, per the Associated Press.

• Liccardo, who served as mayor from 2015 to 2022, will succeed Democratic Rep. Anna Eshoo, who is retiring at the end of her term after three decades. His campaign was largely bankrolled by billionaire Michael Bloomberg.

• The 16th District covers Silicon Valley and is home to tech giants like Google as well as government agencies ranging from the NASA Ames Research Center to the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.

In Oakland, community advocate Lateefah Simon is on track to beat fellow Democrat Jennifer Tran in the race to represent California's 12th Congressional District in the U.S. House.

• The seat is currently held by Democratic Rep. Barbara Lee, who stepped down to run for U.S. Senate after representing the district for 26 years.
• Simon, who is Muslim and legally blind, worked in the San Francisco district attorney's office under Vice President Harris and currently serves on the BART board of directors.

Meanwhile, East Bay officials are planning next steps as recall campaigns against Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price appear likely to succeed.

• Thao, whose home was the target of an FBI raid earlier this year, would leave office immediately once election results are certified. The city council president would take over as interim mayor until a special election is held.
• The process for replacing Price — who faced criticism for missing deadlines to file charges in more than 1,000 misdemeanor cases — is a bit less clear. The county Board of Supervisors would need to appoint a temporary successor and establish a protocol for selecting candidates.
• Both progressive women of color, Thao and Price were elected in 2022.
