The intrigue: The 49ers have been ravaged by injuries up to this point in the season. They're still without star running back Christian McCaffrey who accounted for 160 total yards and one touchdown in the Super Bowl.

• Receivers Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings were each listed as questionable as of Thursday and kicker Jake Moody is doubtful. He went three for three on field goals in the Super Bowl.

Yes, but: They've still amassed a 3-3 record and sit atop the NFC West heading into Sunday's pivotal game.

• Even if the 49ers lose, their next four games are against NFC opponents that will loom large in playoff positioning.

The other side: While much has changed for both teams, the Chiefs (5-0) still have quarterback Patrick Mahomes under center. He's never lost to the 49ers in his career going 2-0 in both the regular and postseason.

What's next: The 49ers are slight betting favorites heading into the game and ESPN's matchup predictor gives them a nearly 52% chance to win Sunday.
