Where to celebrate Filipino American History Month in SF

• This year marks the 20th year of celebrating Filipino American History Month at City Hall.

Festivities include:

The annual commemoration of Filipino hurdles and triumphs in the U.S. Speakers include Warriors hype man Franco Finn, community advocate Marjan Philhour and Philippine consul general Neil Ferrer.

• 5:30-8pm on Oct. 10 at the City Hall Rotunda and North Light Court

Filipino American International Book Festival returns to San Francisco Public Library. The lineup includes Elaine Castillo, author of "America Is Not the Heart."

• 10:30am-5:45pm on Oct. 12 and 1-5:15pm on Oct. 13 at the Main Library

The long-awaited unveiling of the restored, 90-foot Ang Lipi ni Lapu Lapu mural, which depicts famous Filipino and Filipino American figures. There will also be Parol-making and Filipino ice cream tasting.

A Filipino culture crawl throughout SOMA, including stops at Kapwa Gardens and 5M Park.

• 12-6pm on Oct. 19

Undas at Kapwa Gardens, where Kultivate Labs invites the community to submit photos, names and stories to "undas," or ancestral altars.

Zoom out: October marks the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental U.S.

• That took place on Oct. 18, 1587, when "Luzones Indios" aboard the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza landed at what is now Morro Bay, California.
• Filipino American History Month was first celebrated in 1992 as part of a resolution taken up by the Filipino American National Historical Society. It was recognized by the U.S. Congress in 2009.
• October is also the birth month of Filipino American labor leader Larry Itliong, who led the Delano grape strike and helped Cesar Chavez co-found the United Farm Workers union.
