California's legal battles with Trump administration escalate

California leaders are waging more legal battles and direct attacks against President Trump as he overhauls the federal government.

Why it matters: The state is suing the administration at nearly double the rate of Trump's first term with no plans to slow down, CalMatters reports.

By the numbers: California has filed or joined 19 lawsuits against the Trump administration since Inauguration Day, including three last week.

Catch up quick: Last week, California joined 16 Democratic-led states in suing over Trump's move to cut billions in funding for electric vehicle chargers. The state says it could lose more than $300 million, thousands of jobs and critical infrastructure.

• 17 attorneys general, including Rob Bonta, are also suing over Trump's executive order to halt approvals, permits and loans for wind farms.
• And the state joined a lawsuit to block sweeping layoffs at the Department of Health and Human Services and cuts to public health grants.

The intrigue: Meanwhile, Gov. Gavin Newsom is amping up his attacks against Trump on Republicans' home turf.

• Newsom ran an ad on Fox and Friends over the weekend saying "tariffs punish families and risk ending America's run as the world's greatest economy," while boasting that California's economic growth is thanks to "reducing [trade] barriers."
• He also recently launched a fact-checking website to address online misinformation "pushed by right-wing influencers" and claims from Trump, Elon Musk and Fox News.

Yes, but: Newsom has invited Trump allies like Charlie Kirk and Steve Bannon on his new podcast, raising concerns among Democrats.
