Nearly 1 in 5 Heisman trophies have gone to athletes from California — the most of any state.
Why it matters: The award for college football's most outstanding player is arguably the most prestigious honor in sports. The next winner will be revealed Saturday.
By the numbers: California has produced 15 Heisman winners, including the most recent recipient Jayden Daniels, who played quarterback at LSU and now plays in the NFL for the Washington Commanders.
Four hail from San Diego County, including USC's Reggie Bush who reclaimed his title last year.
San Francisco claims two — Gary Beban and O.J. Simpson.
Zoom in: San Diego's winners are all running backs, including Bush, Rashaan Salaam, Ricky Williams and Marcus Allen.
Zoom out: Glenn Davis, John Huarte, Mike Garrett, Jim Plunkett, Charles White, Gino Torretta, Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart are California's other winners, mostly from around Los Angeles and Orange County.
What we're watching: None of this year's finalists are from California, but Travis Hunter and Ashton Jeanty are the favorites to win.
