Nearly 40% of Heisman trophies have gone to athletes from California, Ohio and Texas.
Why it matters: The award for college football's most outstanding player is arguably the most prestigious honor in sports.
By the numbers: California has produced 15 Heisman winners, including the most recent recipient Jayden Daniels, who played quarterback at LSU and now plays for the Washington Commanders.
- Nine winners were born in Ohio, nine in Texas and seven in Pennsylvania.
Fun fact: Three winners have been born outside the country — Frank Sinkwich, Tim Tebow and Robert Griffin III.
Birth states of 2024 Heisman Trophy finalists
- Travis Hunter — Florida
- Ashton Jeanty — Florida
- Dillon Gabriel — Hawaii
- Cam Ward — Texas
The intrigue: If Travis Hunter or Ashton Jeanty (the favorites) win, it would give Florida its fifth Heisman winner.
- The Sunshine State currently holds a three-way tie with Georgia and Oklahoma at four winners a piece.
What's next: The Heisman Trophy ceremony will air at 8pm ET Saturday on ESPN.
Editor's note: This story was corrected to reflect that nine winners (not 10) were born in Ohio.
