San Antonio has begun replacing César E. Chávez Boulevard street signs with Durango Boulevard signs.

Catch up quick: The City Council voted in August to restore the Durango name following allegations that labor and civil rights leader César Chávez sexually abused women and girls, including longtime collaborator Dolores Huerta.

The street had been known as César E. Chávez Boulevard since 2011, when City Council voted to rename Durango Boulevard in his honor.

As of Wednesday, most signs east of South Flores Street to the Alamodome, where the road becomes Iowa Street, had been changed.

State of play: The city began work Monday to replace about 80 signs and expects to finish by the end of the month, Public Works spokesperson Nicholas Olivier tells Axios.

Highway signs are expected to take six months to a year to design, fabricate and install in coordination with the Texas Department of Transportation, Olivier says.

The big picture: More than 18,000 people responded to a city survey on the potential name change, with 64% supporting a return to Durango Boulevard — including nearly 8 in 10 residents who live along the street.

Texas public libraries generate nearly $5 in economic and community value for every $1 invested, according to a new statewide study.

Why it matters: The findings come as libraries face tighter local budgets, including in San Antonio, which can mean fewer staff, reduced hours and cuts to services, according to Texas Library Association executive director Shirley Robinson.

By the numbers: The more than 500 public libraries in Texas generated an estimated $3.8 billion in economic benefits in fiscal 2024, including nearly $2.5 billion in the estimated value of services.

Library spending also directly and indirectly supported 11,200 jobs, per the report.

What they're saying: "This study puts a dollar value on the opportunities libraries create every day," Robinson said at a press conference. "Public libraries deliver value far beyond the books on their shelves," pointing to services ranging from job assistance and internet access to learning new skills and checking out books.

The big picture: Of the nearly 300 library directors surveyed, 82% said their libraries help with job applications, while 68% help residents apply for government benefits and 30% provide telehealth rooms or resources.

Zoom in: San Antonio recently eliminated 39 library positions in its newly adopted fiscal 2027 budget.

The cuts affect 27 library aide and 12 circulation attendant positions across 17 locations, reducing annual spending by about $946,000, San Antonio Public Library spokesperson Yvonne Ramirez tells Axios.

The city says the cuts won't affect services or programming. All 30 library branch locations will remain open with the same hours, and the system's 150 professional librarian positions will remain intact, Ramirez says.

City officials pointed to a 40% decline in physical circulation since 2019 as one reason for the cuts, while digital circulation increased 161% over the same period, per the Express-News.

Zoom out: Hondo Public Library, which serves about 8,600 people with a five-person staff, is highlighted in the report for its digital and financial literacy programs.

The library expanded Wi-Fi hotspot lending and partnered with groups including San Antonio's CyberPatriot on workforce and career training. About half of participants in its 2025 grant-funded programs were first-time library users who became cardholders.

The bottom line: Go check out a book — and everything else your local library has to offer.

Santonia Cantina will open in the former home of Full Goods Diner at Pearl.

The latest: James Beard-recognized husband-and-wife restaurateurs Lizzeth Martínez and Francisco Estrada of Naco Mexican are behind the new restaurant, announced Monday.

Santonia, which is projected to open in November, will draw on the food, drinks and hospitality that connect Northern Mexico and South Texas.

Dig in: The restaurant's centerpiece will be its bar, with cocktails featuring sotol, mezcal and tequila alongside regional flavors like prickly pear, mesquite, pecan and roasted corn.

The food menu will include pork shanks, ribeye tacos, shrimp flautas, ceviches, pozole, fideo and more.

What they're saying: "Santonia is very personal to us because it comes from the region that shaped who we are," Martínez, who was born in Laredo and raised in Nuevo Laredo, said in a statement. "Growing up between Northern Mexico and South Texas, we never saw those influences as separate. They were simply part of everyday life."

"Santonia gives us the freedom to celebrate that culture in a way that feels current, fun, and completely our own."

Flashback: The couple launched Naco Mexican as a food truck in 2017.

Naco has since expanded into a brick-and-mortar restaurant and earned accolades from Texas Monthly, Netflix, Food Network and Forbes.

Spurs basketball returns in less than a month.

Why it matters: The Spurs are coming off their deepest playoff run in years, giving fans plenty of reason to count down to opening night.

The big picture: The Spurs enter the season near the top of preseason power rankings, with several national outlets putting them at No. 1 or No. 2.

The Spurs largely kept last season's Finals roster intact, including re-signing veterans Harrison Barnes and Julian Champagnie.

It was a shorter offseason than usual — but an eventful one. Here's what you need to know before the season starts.

The Spurs added veteran forward Tobias Harris on a two-year, $31 million deal after he averaged 13.3 points and 5.1 rebounds for Detroit last season.

San Antonio also drafted 19-year-old forward-center Jayden Quaintance at No. 20, adding another young big man behind Victor Wembanyama.

The Spurs acquired rookie center Tarris Reed Jr. in a draft-night trade.

Former Bulls head coach Billy Donovan joined Mitch Johnson's staff as lead assistant, replacing Sean Sweeney, who left to become Orlando's head coach.

DAZN is the Spurs' new streaming home this season, carrying all games that aren't exclusively nationally broadcast, plus preseason games and team-produced programming.

The service is $19.99 a month or $119.99 for the season.

Season ticket members get 20% off season passes.

The Spurs Silver Dancers are back after an eight-year absence, reviving a game day tradition that fans had pushed to bring back.

The longtime dance team was disbanded in 2018 and replaced the following season by the co-ed Hype Squad. The Silver Dancers will now perform alongside the Hype Squad.

What we're watching: Quaintance underwent right knee surgery over the summer and could miss significant time to start his rookie season. The Spurs have not announced a timeline for his recovery.

What's next: The preseason tips off Oct. 8 against the Atlanta Hawks at Frost Bank Center. The regular season starts Oct. 20 against the Oklahoma City Thunder, also in San Antonio.
