An immersive experience celebrating the military community is launching in San Antonio next summer, organizers announced Tuesday.
Why it matters: As Military City USA, San Antonio is home to one of the largest concentrations of military bases in the country and has deep military roots.
The latest: Military Con will come to the Henry B. González Convention Center June 4-6 before heading to San Diego in September.
- It will cover about 300,000 square feet. A military advisory board is helping develop the experience to make it authentic.
How it works: Each day of Military Con will have a focus, starting with the inspiration and call to serve, heading into mission preparation and the realities of service, and ending on the return home.
- The immersive environments will allow visitors to learn about military history, training and mission briefings. They can then participate in interactive experiences based on real-world operations.
- There will also be speakers with backgrounds ranging from service members to filmmakers, actors, athletes and authors.
- Expect sessions that explore the technology reshaping the military, including AI and drones.
Zoom in: The three-day event will feature military equipment displays, a marketplace of veteran-owned businesses, and military gaming competitions. Organizers say there will be family-friendly programming.
What they're saying: "Through my work in film and television, I've helped bring military stories to life, but only so many can make it to the screen," Harry Humphries, a military advisor in Hollywood and military director of Military Con, said in a statement.
- "Military Con gives the military community a platform to share so many more of the stories that deserve to be told and gives all of us a chance to listen, connect, and honor those who have served."
What's next: Military Con organizers hope to expand the event into a year-round offering with tour stops around the country.
- Ticket information will be announced online in the coming months.
