San Antonio lands $200M power equipment factory

Industrial Electric Mfg. (IEM) plans to build a $200 million advanced manufacturing campus at Brooks that is expected to create 3,000 jobs by 2030, the company said Tuesday.
Why it matters: The project represents the largest job-producing investment in the San Antonio area in more than two decades, per economic development group Greater SATX, further cementing the region as a hub for advanced manufacturing.
Zoom in: IEM, based in Jacksonville, Florida, makes highly engineered power distribution systems used by industries including data centers, health care, energy and advanced manufacturing.
- The systems include remote power panels, switchgear and switchboards.
- The company plans to develop the campus in phases.
- Jobs will span manufacturing, engineering, logistics and corporate support roles with an average annual salary of approximately $53,000, per Greater SATX.
What they're saying: "IEM is excited to put down roots in San Antonio," IEM CEO Clayton Such said in a statement. "The city's skilled workforce, strong infrastructure, and collaborative economic development environment made this a natural choice for our next phase of growth."
- "This investment by IEM in San Antonio will create new, good-paying jobs and generate a significant economic impact for Bexar County," Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement.
Between the lines: Officials from Bexar County, the state, Greater SATX and Brooks worked together to bring IEM's new campus to San Antonio.
- In January, while IEM was still considering where to expand, Bexar County commissioners authorized negotiations on a proposed 10-year tax abatement deal estimated at $1.55 million.
- The state offered IEM a $3.36 million Texas Enterprise Fund grant for 448 of the jobs it plans to create.
What's next: IEM is expected to release more details about construction and hiring in the coming months.
