Central Texas steps up for pets amid severe weather

• Though the rescue isn't located near a waterway, relentless rain saturated its covered kennel area.
• "Everybody's covered, but with this amount of rain … the rainwater started rushing through the kennels," Woodworth tells Axios, describing a muddy scene.
• Woodworth says it was the nonprofit's first time asking for emergency fosters, and the Boerne and San Antonio communities responded in droves.

By the numbers: In a little more than eight hours, Charming Pets Rescue and volunteer fosters placed 46 dogs into 29 homes.

The latest: The dogs will remain with their foster families until the threat of severe weather has passed, Woodworth says.

What they're saying: "It was really, really awesome how many dogs we got out… every single dog got out," Woodworth says. "I just have the best team ever. I'm so proud of my team. I couldn't have done it if it was just me."

Zoom out: Other animal shelters are also seeking help as storm recovery continues.

• Kerrville Pets Alive shared that Austin Pets Alive stepped in to take in some of its animals.
• San Antonio Animal Care Services (ACS) is also seeking emergency fosters amid a surge of pets arriving from weather-related calls.

What's next: Those interested in helping can visit the ACS campus off Highway 151. Fosters will be provided with supplies and medical care.

• Adoption fees are also being waived through the weekend.
