Many Tex-Mex and Mexican restaurants across San Antonio offer complementary chips and salsa to whet your appetite. But before those baskets of crunchy chips, there were warm, soft tortillas with butter, Texas Monthly reports.
State of bites: La Fonda on Main, a San Antonio institution, used to serve butter with corn tortillas before a meal, per the magazine.
But that practice stopped by the 1970s, Texas Monthly's Mimi Swartz, who is from San Antonio, wrote.
One San Antonio resident recalled that Don Pedro Mexican Restaurant on the South Side served flour tortillas until the '80s.
