San Antonio Startup Week kicks off its 10th year of programming Monday with speakers, workshops and networking events that highlight innovation in the Alamo City.
Why it matters: San Antonio's tech industry is small but growing — that workforce increased by 7% from 2017 to 2022, per CBRE, a commercial real estate firm.
How it works: The five days of events are free and open to the public. Many take place at Geekdom, a downtown coworking space and entrepreneurial community, and other nearby venues.
Reality check: While many events focus on tech, the week isn't just for that industry. It's for anyone "with an idea and interest to turn their side hustle into a business," organizers write on the website.
- Sessions feature owners of coffee shops, restaurants, nonprofits and more.
The big picture: Finding a session about artificial intelligence is easy this year — you can focus on AI for nonprofits, take a hands-on AI literacy workshop, learn the hidden costs of AI and more.
Zoom in: Thursday will focus on innovation in science and health. Other sessions throughout the week include:
- Monday, 12pm: What to know before opening a brick-and-mortar.
- Tuesday, 9am: The future of San Antonio's creative economy.
- Tuesday, 10:30am: Shifting U.S.–Mexico trade dynamics.
- Wednesday, 2pm: Burnout and stress for entrepreneurs.
- Thursday, 11:30am: The future of technology at Port San Antonio.
- Friday, 11am: San Antonio South Side success stories.
By the numbers: Programming is expected to draw about 5,000 participants throughout the week, per a news release.
If you go: Reserve your spot online ahead of time.
The bottom line: "San Antonio's future will be shaped by how we invest in innovation today," Charles Woodin, Geekdom CEO, said in a statement.
