How San Antonio is responding to Abbott's crosswalk order

State of play: Cities and counties have 30 days to remove "non-compliant installations" on streets or risk losing state and federal transportation funding and partnerships, according to a letter from Texas Department of Transportation executive director Marc Williams.

• Decorative crosswalks, murals or markings conveying artwork or other messages are prohibited unless they serve a direct traffic control or safety function, the letter says.

Between the lines: The governor did not mention rainbow crosswalks like the ones in San Antonio, Austin, Houston and Dallas, though they have long been targeted by anti-LGBTQ+ conservatives.

What they're saying: "We are now working with TXDoT to understand the state's specific areas of local concern. There are no immediate plans to make changes to any roadways, and any future changes will occur with City Council input," spokesperson Alanna Reed tells Axios.

• Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones, the city's first openly gay mayor, says she remains "committed to balancing our community's transportation needs with ensuring everyone in our community feels safe, welcomed, and supported."

Flashback: In June, the city designated a stretch of North Main Avenue by the crosswalk, known as The Gay Strip, as a Cultural Heritage District.
