What it's like to soak at the new Ottine Mineral Springs

• The other three pools are temperature-controlled since everything is outdoors. A pass also includes access to a small sauna.
• You can buy food and drinks on site, from wood-fired pizzas to margaritas and juices.

Context: Ottine is at the former campus of the Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital, which treated polio patients, per Texas Highways.

• The mineral water was discovered in 1909 when drilling for oil.
• The new owners first tested it as a members-only soaking club before opening it to the public this summer.

My thought bubble: I loved it. It didn't seem obvious at first that these are mineral pools — it sort of felt like a regular pool day. But after soaking for a while, the feel and smell of the mineral water becomes apparent. Plus, my skin really does feel softer.

How it works: Guests must book ahead. Passes are now offered in two five-hour time slots and cost $65 on weekdays and $75 on weekends. You can stay the whole day for an extra $50.

• Mineral sunscreen is preferred to protect the water quality. Children under 13 are not allowed.

If you go: Ottine Mineral Springs is about an hour drive from San Antonio, and is right next to Palmetto State Park.
