On Sept. 3, 2005 — days after Hurricane Katrina made landfall — about 12,700 evacuees arrived in San Antonio, per the CDC.
Zoom in: They were housed in four primary evacuation centers: an empty warehouse and an office building at the former Kelly Air Force Base, an empty clothing distribution center and an empty department store at the old Windsor Park Mall.
