San Antonio economy booms to $192B, but wages stagnate

Zoom in: Among metros, the San Antonio-New Braunfels region ranked No. 33 in the nation last year for its gross metropolitan product (GMP) of $192.8 billion, per the report. It is expected to reach a GMP of nearly $210 billion in 2026.

• The area's 2024 GMP is higher than Las Vegas' $189.7 billion.

Zoom out: San Antonio represents about 7% of Texas' gross state product (GSP).

• That's far behind the Dallas-Fort Worth metro, which accounts for nearly 29% of Texas' GSP. Houston contributes about 27% and Austin nearly 10% to the state's GSP.

Yes, but: While the region's economic output grows, workers' wages have remained relatively stagnant.

• The area's average annual wage in 2024 was $67,320, seeing just over 1% growth from 2019.

What they're saying: Texas is well positioned to weather any national economic downturns because of the state's population growth, Jeffrey Korzenik, economist for First Third Bank, said earlier this year, per the Houston Chronicle.

• "I think that's going to be the big distinguishing characteristic," Korzenik said. "(The state's) friendly business climate, that's not going to change."
