The San Antonio area has among the lowest number of gyms per 100,000 people among big metros nationwide.
By the numbers: The region has 11.3 gyms for every 100,000 residents, per government data. We rank 74th among 93 U.S. metros with at least 500,000 people.
That translates to 305 gyms for about 2.7 million people in the region.
How it works: The figures represent "fitness and recreational sports centers" in the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages data for Q3 2024.
The latest: Two Gold's Gym locations in San Antonio are closing soon — Nacogdoches on Aug. 3 and Lockhill Selma on Aug. 17, per MySA.
What's next: The newest high-end gyms are setting themselves up as a place to pump iron and take work meetings — though hopefully not at the same time.
