The view from this year's Flotilla Fiesta. Would you guess this is right in the city? Photo: Megan Stringer/Axios
👋 Megan here. Speaking of kayaking, one of my favorite Fiesta events is the Mission Reach Flotilla Fiesta, where you can paddle for free.
Zoom in: The annual event at Acequia Park always manages to feel lowkey, even with a crowd of cars along Mission Parkway. It's family-friendly, featuring a fishing clinic, an art activity and — of course — the kayaking, all for free.
My experience: Getting an immersive view of the San Antonio River, without actually swimming, feels special. You gain a whole new perspective on the waterway and the trails and trees that surround it.
It's sort of like taking a long walk, in that you pay more attention to all the little parts of our city you might normally miss. But instead of just sweating in the sun, you're getting splashed with a bit of water.
What's next: I won't be taking access to kayaks for granted anymore.
