State of play: The state park site near Helotes is known for its dinosaur tracks, and this was my first time seeing them.
It's a five-mile roundtrip hike on the Joe Johnston (JJ) Route.
The latest: Government Canyon is set to expand by more than 800 acres after a local family sold land to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, per the SA Report.
My experience: My hiking partner and I got just a little lost and happened upon the dinosaur tracks by accident — but that made it all the more special. These prints in the dirt have been around longer than my mind can fathom.
The bottom line: Enjoy the reward that is witnessing Earth's history.
