The downtown dining scene just got a little brighter as Luz Roja lights up the northern end of the River Walk with fresh flavors and flair.
Why it matters: As downtown works to regain its pre-pandemic vibrancy, it's encouraging to see new restaurants in the area.
The vibe: Luz Roja, opening Monday, is a lively spot with multiple dining areas, a full bar, and a private event room. It's easy to imagine it becoming the go-to place for girls nights or a destination for out-of-towners, especially with live music on the weekends.
- Located on the banks of the river, just a stone's throw from the Majestic Theatre, Luz Roja is the perfect spot to grab a bite before a show. Two hours of free parking in the attached garage is a nice bonus.
Flashback: The restaurant is in the former home of The Original Blanco Cafe, which served downtown for 45 years before closing in 2023.
- The beloved Tex-Mex spot plans to reopen near City Hall, but it's unclear when. Its Fredericksburg Road location remains open.
Dig in: Luz Roja's menu offers something for everyone. Expect Tex-Mex classics like puffy tacos ($14) and pollo verde enchiladas ($17), alongside lighter options like a grilled avocado Caesar ($13).
- Vegetarians have plenty to choose from — rellenos, enchiladas, tacos, chalupas, tortas and puffy tacos can all be made meat-free.

What to try: The charbroiled fajitas — beef ($24) or chicken ($22) — come with grilled peppers, veggies, beans, guacamole, pico de gallo and more.
- At the preview, the grilled items stood out the most. Every dish packed that authentic, comforting Tex-Mex flavor that makes San Antonio special, but without the heavy, tourist-trap feel.
- What I loved most was that the freshness didn't come at the expense of flavor. Dan Ward, the mind behind the menu, told me everything is cooked in avocado oil for a lighter, yet still full-flavored experience.
