Flix Brewhouse San Antonio took home a gold medal in the Texas Craft Brewers Cup during the weekend.
The big picture: Craft breweries have experienced a wave of closures in San Antonio recently. As the industry struggles, the awards are a reminder that San Antonio brews some top-notch beer.
Zoom in: Flix Brewhouse San Antonio won the gold in the American and international lager category for its Lucha Libre beer.
- Back Unturned Brewing Co. took home a silver medal in the American and European sour category for its Hawaii 210. The company brews it about once a year, it said on Facebook.
- Wild Barley Kitchen and Brewery and Dorćol Distilling and Brewing each won a bronze medal — Wild Barley in the chocolate and coffee category and Dorćol in the session and standard dark German and Czech lager category.
Zoom out: Real Ale Brewing Company in Blanco also won gold in the German Pilsner category this year for its Hans' Pils beer.
- Fredericksburg's Altstadt Brewery won the gold in the session and standard German and Czech lagers category.
How it works: This year marked the fourth annual competition put on by the Texas Craft Brewers Guild, a nonprofit trade organization supporting craft breweries.
- In all, 55 judges tasted 931 anonymous entries from 162 breweries across Texas.
- They awarded 90 medals to 55 breweries this year.
What they're saying: "This competition not only spotlights the exceptional quality and diversity of Texas craft beer but also strengthens the bonds within our brewing community," Caroline Wallace, executive director of the Texas Craft Brewers Guild, said in a statement.
