VITA San Antonio increases income limit for free tax prep

More San Antonians can access free tax preparation through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), as the local coalition has raised the income eligibility limit from $60,000 to $65,000 annually.

Why it matters: VITA San Antonio increased the threshold to help more people save time and money as the costs of living and tax service rise, Roland Martinez, spokesperson for the city's Department of Human Services, tells Axios.

By the numbers: The average American spends $270 and 13 hours filing their taxes, according to the U.S. Treasury Department.

How it works: Taxpayers need to bring a photo ID, Social Security card and all W-2 forms. Returns are filed electronically by VITA volunteers, with refunds arriving in seven to 10 business days.
