San Antonio is stepping up as a running destination with the debut of the SATX Marathon, set to replace the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon after 16 years.
Why it matters: The SATX Marathon, scheduled for Dec. 7, 2025, is expected to elevate San Antonio's reputation as a running city, aiming to join the ranks of destinations like New York and Boston.
The latest: San Antonio Sports and the City of San Antonio unveiled the inaugural marathon during a Monday night event at Hemisfair.
- Unlike the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, part of a global series, the SATX Marathon is entirely rooted in San Antonio's local culture and community.
Zoom in: The SATX Marathon will follow The Running Event (TRE), Dec. 2-4, 2025, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.
- TRE, a leading running industry convention previously held in Austin, announced its move to San Antonio in August. Event director Christina Henderson called the city a "natural choice," with its convention facilities, nearby hotels and atmosphere.
- Together, the convention and marathon are expected to draw over 18,000 runners and walkers to San Antonio, positioning the city as an "epicenter" for the running world during the first week of December, according to San Antonio Sports.
The vibe: The Boston Marathon-qualifying course will highlight San Antonio's heritage through themed segments like the Yanaguana Mile, the Fiesta Mile, the Military Mile, the Rodeo Mile and the Culinary Mile.
What they're saying: "San Antonio's welcoming atmosphere and mild weather make the city an attractive destination," Jenny Carnes, president and CEO of San Antonio Sports, said in a statement.
- "Participants will get to experience a course that's uniquely San Antonio along with the festive spirit of our downtown during the holidays. There's no more beautiful time or better place to run."
What's next: Online registration is open, with special introductory pricing — $89 for the marathon, $79 for the half-marathon and $39 for the 5K.
- The 5K is set for Dec. 5, 2025, followed by the marathon and half-marathon on Dec. 7, 2025.
- Pricing changes, if any, have not yet been announced.
