My favorite tools for surviving New Orleans' brutal summer

The big picture: Nothing beats my tried-and-true method of staying cool — relaxing in an air-conditioned room with an icy beverage.

• Unfortunately, I still have to leave the house in August.

My go-to heat-fighting tools: A large hat and SPF clothing paired with zinc sunscreen.

• A wearable neck fan.
• Icy water in my Owala.
• Staying in the shade whenever possible.

Items I'm trying this summer:

• Disposable cooling wipes. Portable and unscented. So far so good.
• Secret's new cooling mist. Quick relief, but I'm not noticing a lasting cooling effect.
