Free mulch available for New Orleans residents

The city's Department of Parks & Parkways is giving away mulch.

Why it matters: Your yard project just got a lot cheaper.

The big picture: Free wood chips will be available to Orleans Parish residents every Saturday through the end of May.

• Wood chips are available on a first-come, first-served basis at 1 Green Parade Lane in Gentilly.
• The site is open from 8am to noon.
• The mulch comes from the city's routine tree trimming operations. Repurposing the debris keeps it out of landfills, a city statement says.

If you go: Residents must bring their own loading supplies, including shovels, gloves, bags and containers.

• Staff will not be able to help with loading.
