Nearly 75% of Louisiana is in a drought

The big picture: Orleans Parish is in a moderate drought, while parts of Terrebonne are in an extreme drought.

• New Orleans has had 5.2 inches of rain this year, which is 4.26 inches less than normal, according to the National Weather Service.
• Friday's storms dropped about an inch of rain.

Zoom in: Highs in the 70s and 80s — above average for this time of year — are expected for at least the next week, says Rob Frye, an NWS meteorologist.

• Fog development is also expected through at least Thursday night, he says, especially around sunrise.
• Last week, New Orleans was under a red flag warning, which means an increased threat of fires. This week, higher humidity levels are keeping those warnings at bay, Frye says.

Threat level: Marsh fires near Bayou Gauche and in Houma bring concerns about super fog, especially on roads near the blaze.

• Super fog caused multiple fatal crashes in 2023 in southeast Louisiana.

What's next: There's a slight chance of rain Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, the NWS says.
