The claw machine craze has reached metro New Orleans, with a flashy new Japanese-style claw machine arcade opening in Metairie.
The big picture: Super Clawdom debuted earlier this month in a former children's clothing store on Severn Avenue.
- The arcade is bright and shiny inside, with dozens of claw machines packed with stuffed animals.
- The front of the store has bigger prizes and a colorful selfie wall covered with Pokémon and plushies.
How it works: Most machines need two tokens to play. Each token is $1, but you get discounts if you buy in bulk.
- You can exchange your prizes from the machines for bigger ones at the register.

Zoom out: Claw machine arcades, also known as "clawcades," are exploding in popularity in the U.S., according to the Washington Post.
- You'll find them in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Houston, New York, Memphis, Chicago and elsewhere.
- Lafayette has a new one called Gotcha, and Developing Lafayette says the company is expanding to New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
💬 My thought bubble: I hate claw machines and will always pick a game of skill or a video game at an arcade.
- We blew through $20 in less than 15 minutes and walked out with two small lovies.
- It's hard to win. The machine dropped the same plush carrot twice before we complained to a worker, who intervened.
- Not my cup of tea, but my son had fun.
If you go: Super Clawdom is at 3501 Severn Ave., Suite 5B. See hours.
