Mayor LaToya Cantrell, who is under court-ordered travel restrictions ahead of her federal trial, asked a judge for permission to travel to Iceland next month for a family vacation, according to WDSU and WWL.
Why it matters: The request comes less than a week after she turned over her passport as part of her bail hearing.
The big picture: Cantrell has asked Judge Wendy Vitter to allow her to fly to Iceland on Oct. 7-13, according to WDSU. The documents don't say who will be traveling with her.
- Cantrell's pretrial services officer and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jordan Ginsberg said they don't have any objections to the request, according to court documents reviewed by WWL.
Yes, but: Cantrell's next pre-trial hearing is Oct. 13. It's unclear if it will be moved if her travel request is granted.
Catch up quick: Cantrell pleaded not guilty last week to 11 criminal counts, including wire fraud, conspiracy and obstruction of justice.
- Cantrell and her former NOPD bodyguard Jeffrey Vappie are accused of defrauding the city of more than $70,000 related to travel expenses.
- She's allowed to travel freely within 13 parishes in Southeast Louisiana. However, she needs the court's permission to go anywhere farther, writes Katie Jane Fernelius with Verite.
What's next: Cantrell's trial is set to start Nov. 17, WDSU says.
