Helena Moreno continues to maintain her fundraising lead in the mayoral race, but new campaign finance reports show other candidates are gaining ground.
Why it matters: Candidates need money to help distinguish themselves in a crowded field of 14 options.
The big picture: Moreno's large war chest grew even bigger these past three months, her filings show.
- She had $1.5 million on hand and ended with $1.7 million, even after ramping up her spending. She spent nearly three times more than Oliver Thomas this cycle.
- Thomas grew his cash on hand to $434,000, according to his filings.
- Arthur Hunter spent heavily and ended with about $43,000 cash on hand, his documents show.
Zoom in: Royce Duplessis wasn't running the last time campaign reports were filed so this is the first look at his finances.
- He officially announced last month and has so far raised $165,700, filings show.
- He outpaced Hunter in contributions, but not Moreno and Thomas.
The bottom line: You can read filings from candidates in all active races on the Louisiana Board of Ethics' site along with the list of their donors.

What's next: The primary is Oct. 11, followed by the general election in November.
- The deadline to register in person to vote is Sept. 10.
