Good news, New Orleans drivers: The Interstate 10 on-ramp at Carrollton Avenue is expected to reopen on Monday, much earlier than originally estimated after a garbage truck crashed and got stuck last month.
Bad news: The Airline Highway exit will remain closed for up to four more months, authorities say.
The big picture: The garbage truck is expected to be fully removed Monday. Department of Transportation and Development bridge engineers will then inspect the structure, DOTD spokesman Daniel Gitlin told Axios.
- The engineers were hoping to reopen it Friday, he said, but the contractor needed additional equipment. DOTD is using shoring towers to support the structure's stability until it is fully repaired, he added.
- The official detour route for the Airline Highway ramp isn't available yet.

Zoom in: The garbage truck damaged the support beams that connect the Carrollton Avenue/I-10 on-ramp to the Airline Highway exit ramp from I-10 West, Gitlin said.
- "Imagine it like a 3-story building," he said. The crash was on the second story, and it damaged a beam connecting the second and third stories.
- The support beams for the Airline Highway exit ramp will need to be reconstructed before it can reopen, Gitlin said.
- "There is significantly less traffic on the Airline Highway exit compared to the Carrollton on-ramp, so it's not at the same level of emergency as Carrollton," he added.
What's next: The repair project will need to be designed and sent out to bid, Gitlin said.
- Since it's not being done as emergency work, the costs should also be lower, he said. That means the state has a "better chance of being fully reimbursed by the insurance carrier for the garbage company."
