Christmas tree recycling returns to New Orleans in the New Year.
Why it matters: The trees are sunk in the water and used to provide habitat for marine life while also helping with coastal erosion.
The big picture: New Orleans is doing curbside pickup and centralized drop-off points.
- Dec. 26-Jan. 5: Drop off your tree at the Lafitte Greenway (2930 Lafitte Ave.) or at Bodenger Park (3400 Kansas St.).
- Jan. 6 for residents outside the Quarter: Put your tree at the curb by 5am. Pickups will run through Jan. 10.
- Jan. 9 for French Quarter and downtown pickups: Have your tree at the curb by 4am.
- Call 311 if your tree is missed.
In Jefferson Parish, you have curbside and drop-off options too.
- Jan. 4-Jan. 14: Drop off your tree at 400 David Drive or 6440 Lapalco Blvd.
- Jan. 8: Put your tree at the curb. Pickups will happen through Jan. 11.
How it works: Trees need to be naked — no stands, flocking, tinsel, lights or ornaments — to be picked up.
State of play: New Orleans has had a Christmas tree recycling program for more than 25 years. The trees go to the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge.
- The trees are collected, sorted, bundled and dropped by helicopter in targeted areas in the refuge through a partnership with the Louisiana National Guard and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
- This is Jefferson Parish's 35th year. The trees are used to build wave-dampening fences within the Barataria Basin.
