New Orleans is embracing its City of the Dead reputation and hosting two vampire balls this week.
Why it matters: Nothing can stop the party in New Orleans, even death.
The big picture: Anne Rice's annual vampire ball is the most famous of the balls.
- Friday's event at Derbès Mansion is sold out.
- The late New Orleans author built an undead empire based on her character, Lestat de Lioncourt. It's the 36th year the Vampire Lestat Fan Club has thrown the ball.
- This year's theme is "Théâtre des Vampires."
Tickets still available: The Endless Night vampire ball is Saturday at the House of Blues. It's doing a combo celebration with Día de Los Muertos.
- The vibe: "Venetian masquerade meets a vampire court, with the energy of a rock concert and the elegance of burlesque cabaret."
- Tickets start at $150.
New this year: The Queen's Labyrinth Ball debuted Halloween night at Elms Mansion on St. Charles Avenue.
- The dress code was more expansive than vampires, but the vibes seemed similar.
If you go: Costumes are required, with some stricter than others.
