The YMCA in Metairie covers the classics of a pool day with your family — a big place to swim, tables for picnicking and convenient bathrooms.
Why it matters: This is one of the most affordable day-pass pools for families in metro New Orleans.
The big picture: The YMCA sells day passes for $15/person (the price went up this year from $10), and you get access to the pool, gym and all the facilities.
- The Y requires paperwork on your first visit, so prepare to spend a few minutes filling it out before your adventure starts.

What to expect: It's a very large outdoor pool divided into lanes. On the Saturday I visited with my family, there were maybe a dozen or so other families, and we had space to spread out.
- It has a wide stair entry and goes to 5.5 feet deep. The lifeguards are strict but friendly. Children have to pass a swim test or wear a life jacket.
- Pool toys and noodles are allowed, but inner tubes and floaties are not.
- The focus is on safe fun.
If you go: This is a fully DIY pool. Bring your own towels, food and drinks. Alcohol isn't allowed.
- Rouses is next door, so it's an easy stop at the deli if you don't want to make a PB&J at home.
- The locker rooms and showers are accessible from the pool.
Carlie's thought bubble: The pool is lacking in tropical vibes, but it makes up for that with space and a welcoming atmosphere.
