New Orleans reality stars Jovi Dufren and his wife Yara Zaya were on the red carpet over the weekend for the People's Choice Awards.

  • They were nominated for best reality show of the year for their roles in TLC's "90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?" but lost to "The Kardashians."

What's happening: Jovi, a New Orleans native, and Yara, who is from Ukraine, talked with Axios on the red carpet Sunday about Yara's experience so far living in New Orleans.

Food: Yara's first food in New Orleans was alligator. "I thought it was chicken. It tastes fairly good."

Saving animals: Yara once saved a turtle in the middle of the road. "Jovi said, 'Good job, Yara. We in New Orleans eat the turtles. Somebody's going to make soup.'"

Yara's favorite thing about New Orleans: "City is very historical. A little Spain, maybe a little bit French. It reminded me of home a little bit. And jazz."
