Old News: Lincoln's funeral train stops in Indianapolis

• After briefly stopping in Richmond, Indiana around 3am to a crowd of between 12,000 and 15,000 people on April 30, the train pulled into Indianapolis around 7am as rain battered the city.
• It was one of roughly a dozen principal public viewings on the route.

Zoom in: The city was decorated with arches, evergreens and flags for the occasion, according to the Indiana Historical Bureau.

• The Indianapolis city band played the Lincoln Funeral March while soldiers escorted his casket to the Statehouse, where it would lay in an open rotunda for hours.

By the numbers: The Indianapolis Daily Gazette estimated that 60,000 residents and 15,000 troops passed through the rotunda that day.

• It passed through cities like Zionsville, Whitestown, Lebanon, Lafayette and Michigan City before crossing into Illinois and arriving in Springfield at 9am on May 3.

The latest: In March 2009, state historical markers commemorating the event were installed on the south lawn of the Indiana Statehouse by the Indiana Historical Bureau and Indiana Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.
