Several local officeholders are looking to unseat one of the House Democrats' longest-serving members.
Why it matters: The winner of the primary to represent Lawrence at the Statehouse will most likely be uncontested in November, so your chance to weigh in is now.
State of play: Early voting is underway for the May primary and we're continuing to break down key races on your ballot.
- State representatives are on the ballot every two years.
- Most Indianapolis-area House races don't have primaries, but three incumbents do face challengers this year.
Zoom in: One of the most competitive races is the one for District 95, where incumbent John L. Bartlett is facing two challengers — Indianapolis City-County Councilor Keith Graves and Lawrence Common Council member Tyrell Giles.
- Bartlett has served in the Indiana General Assembly since 2007, when he was selected to fill a legislative vacancy, and was first elected in 2008.
- Graves and Giles have said it's time for the district to be represented by someone more involved in the community.
- Bartlett says now isn't the time for change.
Flashback: Graves stepped down as chair of the City-County Council's education committee last year after being accused of domestic abuse, according to IndyStar.
- He denied the allegations and no charges were filed.
Zoom out: Residents in districts 94 and 97 will also see primaries on their ballots.
- In District 94, incumbent Cherrish Pryor has been in office since 2008. The caucus floor leader is being challenged by André Sisk, Sr., who doesn't have an online presence for his campaign.
- Incumbent Justin Moed has served in the House since 2012, representing District 97. He's being challenged by political newcomer Sarah Shydale.
What's next: Early voting runs through May 4, with Election Day on May. 5.
