GE investing $65 million across Indiana

Driving the news: "Maintaining U.S. aerospace leadership requires sustained investment in our people, our facilities and the technologies that will define the future of flight," GE Aerospace CEO Larry Culp said, announcing the investment Monday.

Zoom in: The Indianapolis facility is expected to receive $43 million in new machines, tooling and facility upgrades to expand capacity and maintain quality as demand grows.

• The site manufactures combustors and structural engine parts used in narrowbody and widebody commercial aircraft, as well as in military fighter jet and helicopter engines.

Zoom out: The Lafayette plant will get $7 million in upgrades and $15 million will be injected into Terre Haute.

What they're saying: Culp told Axios that the consecutive investments in U.S. plants are fueled by a $200 billion order backlog.

• The company has seen an increase in demand for engines from commercial airlines chasing growing demand for air travel and the U.S. military and its allies.

The bottom line: "We know airlines around the world are looking to expand and modernize. That means more new airplanes, which require new engines," Culp said, adding that GE Aerospace has orders to fulfill all the way into the 2030s.

• At the same time, he added, air travel is busier than it's been in years, "which for us means [providing] servicing and support parts."
